.org
The .org domain was one of the original TLDs established in 1985, now managed by the Public Interest Registry (PIR). Initially designated for organizations that didn’t fit .com or .net, it became the standard choice for non-profits, open-source projects, and community organizations. Wikipedia.org, Craigslist.org, and the Internet Archive (archive.org) are among its most famous registrants. In 2019, a controversial attempted acquisition of PIR by private equity firm Ethos Capital was blocked by ICANN after widespread community opposition. Today .org remains strongly associated with trust, transparency, and public interest, making it the preferred domain for NGOs, charities, educational initiatives, and advocacy groups worldwide.
